Chungking Mansion - Just Don't Go There
After spending (too) much time there I have to seriously recommend NOT to go to the Chungking Mansion on 36-44 Nathan Road, Kowloon, Hong Kong, especially if you are female.
95% of the people hanging around there are males, who don't have the slightest idea of appropriate behavior towards women.
Going there as a female you won't have to wait more than a minute until the mostly Indian guys start molesting you in a very rude and offensive way. If walking around in Chungking Mansion, be ready for sexual harrassment of all kinds, starting with grabbing you when passing by and ending with them trying you to talk you into sexual intercourse with them after a enforced ten-second dialogue.
Also don't go to the guesthouses there. Although some guesthouses may be clean (I never saw one of those) most of them are just horrifyingly dirty and small. Bedsheets are not changed and smell ghastly. Then, the forced taklks with the Indian owners, who are not better than their compatriots downstairs are sometimes just unbearable. So is the stench in the staircase, which one might use to avoid the grabbing in the elevator.
Ever woke up in the middle of the night, the guesthouse's owner hammering your door just to show the next day's renter the room? Ever woke up in the morning of the next day, the guesthouse's owner hammering your door compelling you to leave the room a.s.a.p? Never had such experience? Then go and be guest at the Chungking Mansion.
Just some weeks ago I found myself in the staircase of one of the Cungking Mansion blocks, with a drunken man blocking my way and trying to get hold of me. I got out of this situation just by threatening him with pepper-spray and a good sprint.
I did a lot of travelling during the past years but Chungking mansion is certainly the place, where I felt most uncomfortable.
