เหล้าขาว Lao Khao – Thailand’s Rocket Fuel
Pic: discostas
Initially Lao Khao had not been designed as rocket fuel but as simple rice liquor, people would drink in rural villages. It has not been proofed, yet, that Lao Khao is capable of propelling rockets. It certainly has a rocket-propelling effect on Thai humans though.
Lao Khao is made of rice and thus has it’s name (Lao means liquor and Khao meand rice).
A bootle is around 80 Baht (2,70 US$) and enough to take you to outer space.
Lao Khao is consumed on almost every occasion – on festivals even willingly in the morning.
But even for Thais it is hard to drink that liquor pure, as it is too disgusting in taste. So, one drinks a glas of ice water first, downs the Lao Khao shot and flushes with ice water. The glass is passed on and pretty soon you feel comfortable and happy.
Lao Khao is also consumed in Thailand mixed with sweet, colored soft drink. Just drink a third of a 1-liter bottle of red Fanta and pour in a o,33-bottle of Lao Khao. Drinking this mixture is even tolerable and soon the recommended daily allowance is passed and left behind.
Lao Khao is together with Leo beer most prevalent in rural Thailand since the expensive Thai-Whiskeys (Saeng Som, Mekong and friends) are unaffordable for poor rice farmers.
On village festivals Lao Khao makes reliably sure that most men and village juveniles are bombed out by noon.
Of course, this omnipresence of cheap, high-proof liquor, along with poverty and boredom has a grave impact. Many of the male inhabitants of Thai villages are alcoholics – for their already destitute families an almost unbearable burden. Many households have hardly more money for a week than a bottle of Lao Khao costs.
An admittedly cheesy but very real music video on the effects of Lao Khao
